LESSED Lord, who hast caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning; Grant that we may in such wise hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that by patience and comfort of thy holy Word, we may embrace, and ever hold fast, the blessed hope of everlasting life, which thou hast given us in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
I love the Collect for this week, and I love the treasure trove that is the scripture. One of the readings for this morning reveals at least one place in the scripture that is foundational for the prayer:
“For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope. (Romans 15:4)
I couldn’t help but notice the next two verses as well:
“May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you the same attitude of mind toward each other that Jesus Christ had, so that with one mind and one voice you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
It is strange that this Christmas season, this period when we celebrate the Child, is also such a time of stress. We rush around honking our horns and making unkind gestures at one another, while our sound systems proclaim Joy to the World. The shopping, baking, decorating, and general merry-making can turn us into ogres. I speak from personal experience. Some of my worst mothering moments came during December.
I want to approach the coming week with this prayer on my lips, the Word in my heart, and the example of Jesus guiding my actions. I want to “mark, learn, and inwardly digest” this lesson. Lord, help me! Merry Christmas!
