“…but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil.” Romans 16:19b
At the end of the book of Romans, Paul is getting in all of the last little things he wants to say. He’s sending greetings, speaking words of encouragement and throwing in last little gems of wisdom. The line above is one of those, and though it is short, it is NOT an easy warning to heed.
The New Testament is very clear about the fact that we are not to judge. At the same time, over and over we are told to discriminate wisely, to recognize good and run from evil. This is difficult. How do we stay open-hearted and loving while being wary and wise?
I think the answer is in Jesus through the work of the Holy Spirit. We must constantly tune in to the moving of the Spirit upon our hearts and minds. That takes training. Lord, teach me!
