“Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God” I Peter 4:1-2
These verses repeat a principle found in much of the New Testament: We have been crucified with Christ. Since we died with Him, we were also raised with Him to new life. I like the fact that this passage tells us to use this principle by letting it inform our outlook on life, I like the idea that I can “arm” myself by thinking correctly.
So, I’d like to tell this guy off? Too bad, dead people can’t do that. I’m going to have to love him instead. I have an opportunity to use just a little deceit, call it “spin” if you like, and get ahead at work? Nope. My passions are no longer aimed at my own success. My passion is for the Gospel. I’ll be honest because I bear the name of Christ and He wills me to be so.
The problem I have is remembering to keep this picture in the front of my mind. Picturing myself as dead is not necessarily pleasant, but it’s powerful; picturing myself alive with Christ, well, it doesn’t get better than that!
