Judging Rightly

“Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” John 7

This verse is simple to read and understand, but hard to obey.  Most things in our society are arranged so that we will judge by appearances.  From glossy advertisements to the strategic placement of “specials” in the grocery store, we are manipulated by those who know how to score off this most human of tendencies.

Only by God’s grace can we see past our first impressions, past the information our eyes pass along to follow our hearts, and God’s wisdom, instead.  Listening to the Holy Spirit while our vision is screaming at us takes practice, but the Father is a patient teacher.  I’m slowly learning that very few things are as good–or as bad–as they look.  I don’t want to be distracted by shiny stuff, or led into despair by gathering storm clouds.  Lord, help me to judge rightly!
